A half-day or full-day rafting trip on the Zambezi is, for most people, plenty of adrenaline for one holiday. But there's a smaller group of travellers — the ones who finish their first run through the Batoka Gorge already asking "how much more of this river is there?" — for whom one day is never quite enough. This one's for them.

What a multi-day trip actually adds

A standard full-day trip covers a serious stretch of the gorge in a single push. A multi-day rafting expedition extends that same run over several days, with nights spent camping on the river shores between rapids — turning a single big adrenaline hit into an immersive expedition through one of the most remote and dramatic gorges in Africa.

You're not just rafting for longer; you're experiencing the gorge in a completely different way. Mornings on a sandbank with mist still hanging over the water. No phone signal, no road access, no sense of the outside world — just the walls of the Batoka Gorge rising around you and the sound of the next set of rapids somewhere downstream.

Who it's for

Multi-day trips can be booked individually if you're travelling solo or as a couple, but they genuinely come into their own as a private group or team adventure. We regularly build these into corporate incentive trips and team-building programmes — there's not much that bonds a group faster than getting a raft through grade 4 and 5 water together, then setting up camp side by side that evening. They also suit friend groups and families with older teens looking for something well beyond a standard holiday activity.

The essentials carry over from our standard trips

Whether you're out for half a day or several, the core of a Maano Adventures rafting trip doesn't change:

  • Experienced guides. Every trip is led by guides with 10+ years on this specific river — multi-day trips demand that experience even more, given the remote terrain and changing conditions.

  • Safety kayaker support. A safety kayaker follows the raft throughout, on multi-day trips as on any other.

  • Proper safety briefing and gear. You'll get a full briefing, correctly fitted gear and PFD jacket, and clear instruction on river safety before you set off — including what to do if you flip (stay calm, keep your feet downstream, and let your PFD do its job).

  • The minimum age is 15, and general fitness matters more here than on a single half-day trip, given the days of paddling and the gorge access points along the way.

  • Free video and photography of the trip, included at no extra cost.

What's different about the logistics

Multi-day trips are inherently more of an expedition than an activity booking. You'll need to think about:

  • Kit for camping, not just for the river — we'll brief you on exactly what to bring.

  • Valuables. As with our day trips, leave passports, cameras and valuables at your hotel where possible; anything you must bring can be secured for you.

  • Group size and private bookings. Multi-day trips are particularly well suited to private group bookings — talk to us about numbers and we'll help you plan accordingly.

  • Timing. These trips are best planned around low water season (roughly August to January), when the fuller run of the gorge is typically open. See our guide to high water vs low water rafting season for more on how timing affects the trip.

Designing your expedition

Because every multi-day trip is a bigger undertaking than a standard rafting day, we build these itineraries together with you rather than selling them off a shelf — including whether you want the rafting expedition to stand alone, or to combine with a Chobe safari, a Mosi oa Tunya walk with the rhino, or time relaxing around Victoria Falls before or after.
